Archaeologists discovered that the Megaron had burned down in a very rapid fire. If anyone was inside when the burning started, they must have left in a big hurry. Many valuable objects were left behind.
Because of the type of objects found inside the Megaron, scientists think that it was possibly a place of worship or ritual.
Here are some of the items you should look for inside the building:
Scepter
Arm Ring
Ceramic Pot
When you click on each item, you'll find out more about how it was made and used.
-a scepter lying on an altar-like base. The head of the scepter, which symbolized power, is made of a glassy material called faience. The Egyptians were among the first people to discover the technique for making faience out of quartz powder fused under heat with various minerals to give it a pale green to blue tint. It is possible that the Trojans imported their scepter head and other faience objects from Egypt.
-an arm ring, or bracelet, made from a section of antler. The bony cylinder taken from the horn or antler of an animal is carved with a geometric design. The holes bored along the edges could have been for laces of leather or ribbon-or even for decorative tassels.
-a ceramic pot with figurines. The pot was made with “lugs” which allowed a string to pass through securely, so that the vessel could hang from an overhead beam. Maybe the pot contained something (honey?) which attracted crawling insects or rodents-hanging it up away from the floor might discourage these uninvited guests. The figurines sit on the rim of the pot, facing outwards with their arms in a position of prayer or warning.
